7 of the best interior design trends for 2020
Our experienced designers round up 7 of the very best interior design trends for our homes in 2020.
1) The abstract design
Inspired by abstract expressionist artwork, this playful design trend features big and bold geometric shapes and bright blocks of colour. It celebrates the imperfection of hand-drawn sketches and lines and can be used to decorate a whole room with big blocks of painted walls or to update existing decor with a few carefully chosen cushions.
2) The stripped back style
An evolution of the Nordic trend we saw in 2019, the stripped back style is all about creating a calm, comfy and chilled space to unwind in at the end of the day. Gone are the cool greys of the last few years and instead we’re seeing warming neutrals, such as creams and pastel blues and greens, tip toe in to take their place. Fitted furniture in a natural wood colour is perfect for this style.
3) The biophilia
It won’t come as a surprise that over the last few years more and more of us are seeking a re-connection with nature. It’s only natural therefore that as we look to lower the impact we have on the environment by switching to plant-based and reusable goods, this desire is seeping into our homes. The biophilia trend then, refers to the human instinct to connect with nature and a desire to incorporate natural elements in our interior design, so choose natural wood furniture and fibres made from eco-friendly materials.
4) The Japanese
The Japanese design hints we’ve been seeing over the last few seasons will really come into its own this year and with rich silk textures, delicate bird motifs, oriental prints and structured furniture, it’s easy to see why. If you’re looking to update your bedroom, now’s the perfect time as fitted sliding door wardrobes will be bang on trend (and give you lots of space to hide all the clutter).
5) The black and white
Who’d have thought that the two colours at either end of the colour spectrum would work so well in creating striking interior designs? Black and white may be polar opposites but when brought together, they create truly striking rooms. From chevron print to marble, there are countless ways to incorporate this gorgeous trend into your home this year. If you’re feeling really bold, why not paint a room’s walls in the contrasting colours?
6) The bright colour kitchen
Gone are the days of the plain old white or cream kitchen cabinets. This year we’re already seeing a desire for brightly coloured kitchens cupboards, such as crimson, navy, royal purple and even canary yellow! At Custom Made Furniture, we specialise in creating stand out kitchens tailor made to give you the kitchen of your dreams, no matter the colour.
7) The eclectic design
Not sure which style is right for your home? Good news! You can now take the best bits from each as the eclectic trend, the practice of artfully matching mismatched styles, is going to be very hot in 2020. The key to getting this look right is to pick key pieces in rich clashing tones, like royal blue or ruby, and mixing them with warmer metallic shades for background items.
